God Speaks To Men

There has been criticism of Christians who believe that they can hear from God and obey Him. While it is true that God does not necessarily speak to men audibly as they speak to one another, He does communicate with them. The God who was able to create us and our hearts also knows how to communicate with us. He is able to give us understanding hearts and make our hearts understand with and without words. Primarily His communication comes to us through the Bible and what He communicates without words will never violate any doctrine or principle recorded in the Bible. He doesn*t just speak to us through our senses. He speaks to our hearts and to the whole man. We can know that we are hearing from Him because He makes it plain that we are. Some deny that they have heard from Him. They are without excuse.

Romans 1:19: Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

John 6:44: No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Adam Clarke*s Commentary: *But how is a man drawn? St. Augustin answers from the poet, Trahit sua quemque voluptas; a man is attracted by that which he delights in. Show green herbage to a sheep, he is drawn by it: show nuts to a child, and he is drawn by them. They run wherever the person runs who shows these things: they run after him, but they are not forced to follow; they run, through the desire they feel to get the things they delight in. So God draws man: he shows him his wants-he shows the Saviour whom he has provided for him: the man feels himself a lost sinner; and, through the desire which he finds to escape hell, and get to heaven, he comes unto Christ, that he may be justified by his blood. Unless God thus draw, no man will ever come to Christ; because none could, without this drawing, ever feel the need of a Saviour.*

Psalms 32:8: I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Treasury Of David: *As servants take their cue from the master*s eye, and a nod or a wink is all that they require, so should we obey the slightest hints of our Master, not needing thunderbolts to startle our incorrigible sluggishness, but being controlled by whispers and love touches. The Lord is the great overseer, whose eye in providence overlooks everything. It is well for us to be the sheep of his pasture, following the guidance of his wisdom.* Matthew Henry*s Concise Commentary: *God teaches by his word, and guides with the secret intimations of his will. David gives a word of caution to sinners. The reason for this caution is, that the way of sin will certainly end in sorrow. Here is a word of comfort to saints. They may see that a life of communion with God is far the most pleasant and comfortable.*

John 7:46: The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Acts 7:51: Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Romans 10:21: But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

The truth of the matter is that God communicates with men and that men who do not want to hear and obey will harden their hearts and be unable to hear and obey Him.

Psalms 95:7: For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Acts 28:27: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

To be continued.
